So interesting! I'm so curious - why do you use Substack? I've done a lot of research and I still can't shake the feeling that with Substack my readers are substack users first - THEN only "my audience".
Do you really own your platform on Substack? Do you think you could've grown faster with another tool like Beehiiv instead?
Good question, I made a decision for Substack early on because I just like the structure and setup. I didn't do too much research though. I think a friend suggested it.
Owning the platform? I don't think you really own any platform - but I 'own the audience' so to speak. Which means I get the email addresses and that matters most for me in case I ever want to move.
I think Substack has great referral and recommendation features - I'm not so sure about Beehiv.
I really connect with what you’ve described in terms of misguided expectations around traffic early on. Took me a while to understand that the game needs a certain critical mass to deliver any sort of results.

Also, thank you for this!
